I’m so excited to share my newest collection, titled “Kitchen Rothko,” which is now available through Well + Wonder.
Growing up, my grandmother lived with us and helped to raise me and my sister. Like many Chinese of her generation, she was not verbally demonstrative of her love. Instead, she showed love by taking care of us and feeding us. She would always have freshly peeled and cut fruit for me and my sister — I remember doing my homework in the late afternoon sun while she would bring grapefruit, watermelon, grapes, and strawberries for us to eat. For me, cut fruit is a symbol of love, home, and family.
Artistically, as I was planning out this collection, I knew I wanted to focus on color and composition. One of my favorite artists is Mark Rothko — I love his use of color which is both striking from afar and nuanced from up close. For these paintings, I used layers and washes to create subtle differences in each highlight and shadow. I love how the simple compositions allow the color stories to sing!
I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I enjoyed making it! To me it represents everything about summer - the colors, the happiness, the sunshine & warmth.
